Comparing tenant floors without misleading averages

Facility managers often hear requests to rank tenant floors by efficiency. A single average kilowatt-hour per square metre can look decisive and still be unfair when hours of operation, fit-out density, or shared lobby loads differ.

Prefer charts that keep floors side by side for the same billing period, with footnotes for known differences. When meters mix common areas into tenant feeds, say so plainly rather than forcing a clean ranking.

For portfolios, group like floors before comparing across buildings. A trading floor and a sparsely occupied storage level should not share a leaderboard. Energy consumption reporting earns trust when it refuses false precision.

If ownership insists on a single index, publish the assumptions beside it and refresh them when a major tenant changes hours. The index then becomes a conversation aid, not a hidden judgment.
